Solar-powered, sun-chasing, wave-crushing

Leading the Way in Solar Boat Innovation

Solar Powered Boat

Over the course of the next few decades, we will see enormous developments towards electrification of all forms of transport and an increasing reliance on energy generation from within marine environments. This project provides valuable opportunities for students to address relevant and exciting challenges and to develop key competences that are fundamental for the future of our engineering sectors.

The SoleX Journey

Driven by the University of Exeter’s desire to promote sustainability and innovation in engineering, the SoleX solar boat was conceptualised in 2016. Then thanks to the efforts of enthusiastic, committed, and dedicated students and staff, the boundaries of solar energy in the marine sector have been pushed forward. Following successful initial fundraising, the generosity of various sponsors has been essential in keeping this project afloat.

Who We Are

About SoleX

"The Renewable Energy Solar Boat team has worked tirelessly to prepare SoleX, the university’s hydrofoiling solar boat, for international competitions. Our students do a magnificent job of securing sponsorships, engineering the boat’s electrical and mechanical systems, managing the project and raising awareness via social media. Their achievements are a testament to the excellence and dedication fostered by our university. Their hard work, innovation, and commitment not only showcase their brilliance but also reflect the high standards and supportive environment of our institution. I am incredibly proud of their accomplishments and thrilled to accompany them to competitions"
